Provider of Groundbreaking Bunion Procedure Joins New Central Florida Podiatric Group

A revolutionary bunion procedure is available now in Central Florida. Dr. Evan Young, an early adopter of the miniBunion™ minimally-invasive bunion system, is bringing the procedure to the new Modern Foot & Ankle® when he joins the group in February.

CrossRoads® Extremity Systems developed the miniBunion™ to help patients rapidly return to their active lives and responsibilities at home and work. Traditional bunion procedures require patients to remain off their feet for an extended period of time. With the miniBunion™, patients can have a walking recovery and resume their activities more quickly. Minimally-invasive procedures can cause less soft-tissue trauma, preserve the blood supply to the bones, and leave a smaller scar.1

Key benefits of miniBunion over traditional bunionectomy

“The miniBunion™ offers a single, small incision with enough stability to allow immediate weight-bearing,” said Dr. Young. “It also provides the added benefit of avoiding the great toe joint entirely, which avoids the most common post-operative complaint of joint stiffness. I have been pleasantly surprised by how quickly the post-operative pain is alleviated, as well as how quickly most patients get back into tennis shoes.”

Dr. Young comes to Modern Foot & Ankle from Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He is a triple board-certified foot and ankle surgeon who is renowned for his skill and range.

“My residency training was heavily focused on complex reconstruction, limb salvage, and pediatric deformity correction; however, I love all aspects of foot and ankle surgery,” said Dr. Young.

“During my training and early practice years I found most traditional bunion procedures to be rather antiquated,” said Dr. Young. “The results with legacy procedures may have been ‘acceptable,’ but I felt there had to be something better. I trained with several different minimally-invasive systems prior to deciding that the miniBunion™ was the best one.”

In September, Dr. Young was selected as a recipient of the miniBunion™ Center of Excellence award after performing more than 25 procedures. He is one of a handful surgeons in the country to have earned this distinction.

“Not too many physicians here know how to perform the miniBunion™ and even fewer are as experienced as Dr. Young is,” said Dr. Michael Zuri, a partner of Modern Foot & Ankle. “But training every doctor on the service and expanding it to more clinics is a priority because it’s something patients can really benefit from.”

Modern Foot & Ankle recently expanded into a multi-regional group with offices in Tampa Bay and Orlando Areas. On top of adding the miniBunion™ procedure to its list of services, the practice is providing patients with new board-certified physicians, longer hours and a brand-new clinic in Winter Garden, Fla.

“Just like the new surgical options we’re offering patients, we’re making our facility in Horizon West top-of-the-line,” said Dr. Adam Siegel, another partner of Modern Foot & Ankle. “From the moment you book an appointment to when you leave the clinic, we want everyone to receive an unparalleled patient experience.”

The site of the new office is located near the Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital. Dr. Roma Patel, the third partner of Modern Foot & Ankle, will be the practitioner at this location when construction culminates in early 2021.

Dr. Patel says she is excited to introduce the Modern Foot & Ankle brand to a growing area.

“I am looking forward to providing care to the Horizon West community, as well as the surrounding communities with our new state-of-the-art office,” she said.
